The families of approximately 2,000 students living in the Cane Ridge and Antioch high school clusters will begin receiving school assignment letters this week notifying them of zoning changes that will be implemented for the 2011-2012 school year. The changes follow recommendations that are part of the first year of implementation of a 10-year plan for managing the growth in the southern area of Davidson County. The Board of Education approved moving forward with the first year of implementation earlier this summer at the recommendation of the district’s task force on student assignment and after reviewing public comment and information from community meetings held in the spring.
“The Antioch and Cane Ridge areas have seen significant population growth over a number of years,” said MNPS Director of Student Assignment Chris Weber. “We have built and expanded several schools to meet the needs of this area. The purpose of this 10-year plan is to give families an idea of how we will move forward in using our existing schools, as well as expanding and planning for additional school facilities.”
Annual reviews of the plan will create opportunities to update as needed.
Families affected by the changes will receive a letter that explains which school their child will be assigned to attend next fall, as well as where to learn more about other school options available to them. These letters will be sent home from school with the student and a second copy will be mailed to the address of record. The changes will not affect enrollment for children currently assigned or approved to attend an out-of-zone school or magnet school; however, all students living in the geographic areas affected by the new zoning will receive the informational letter.
