Each week during the school year, the Hume-Fogg PTO provides this on-line summary of upcoming happenings and news of interest to Hume-Fogg families. Information comes from H-F’s administration, teachers, parents, students, SGA and PTO committee chairs. Upcoming Events
Thursday, Oct. 29, Freshman Night Out, 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. at Hume-Fogg
All Freshmen and their parents are encouraged to attend Freshman Night Out on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. at Hume Fogg. Students will discuss strategies for academic success with faculty members, and Principal Paul Fleming and 9th grade counselor Bess Romberg will lead a separate workshop for parents.

Parent Conference Day – Friday, Oct. 30, 12:30 - 4 p.m.
Teachers will contacting parents of students who made below a 70 in their classes during the first nine-week grading period to set up an individual conference.  Our guidance department will be setting up parent conferences for all students who had multiple class grades below 70. Please feel free to contact any of your child's teachers this week to set up a conference time for this Friday. Although Friday is the official parent conference day, parents can request a conference with a teacher at any time during the school year.

Ghost Tours hosted by SGA Friday, Oct. 30, starting at 7 p.m.
SGA is hosting "Ghost Tours" from 7-10p.m. Advance tickets are available for $5 in the front hallway during lunch today through Thursday. Tickets are also available at the door for $8. Is Hume-Fogg haunted? Find out Friday night, when you’ll meet the ghosts of H-F’s past as they come to life during  a chilling tour of our historical building!

Tea with Belle and Friends - Halloween event for siblings and friends – $10
On Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009
, you can make your favorite child’s dream come true by bringing them to a tea with Belle and Friends at Hume-Fogg. The tea starts at 10 a.m., and there will be ample opportunities to meet Belle and other cast members from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, as you and your child, sibling or friend:

  • Enjoy cookies, fruit, punch, and of course, delicious tea from Mrs. Potts.
  • Greet the characters—each child will get their own “autograph book” to gather signatures
  • Once in a lifetime “Photo-op” – have your child’s picture taken with their favorite character(s) and decorate their own picture frame
  • Receive a rose from the Prince
  • Purchase paper dolls of Belle, Beast, and friends - a “must-have” for your little princess!

November 1 – deadline for entering Bennington Young Writers contest
Bennington College will awards prizes of $500 and $250 to students who win in the Bennington Young Writers Awards. Students must be in grades 10, 11 or 12, and may enter up to three pieces of poetry, a short story, a one-act play or a non-fiction essay. All entries must be sponsored by a teacher and postmarked by Nov. 1. November 5: Math contest at Pope John Paul II – Ms. Boles and team members will leave immediately after school.

Nov. 5, 6 and 7: Fall Musical – Beauty & the Beast
Bring all the Disney fans in your household to Hume-Fogg’s magical production of Beauty and the Beast. Four shows: 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, and Friday, Nov. 6, and a matinee at 2 p.m. and the closing night show at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Athletic Go Passes are ready for pick up. If you’ve paid for a Go Pass and haven’t yet picked it up, go to Room 404, and pick it up from Ms. Burgess.

Go to the Galapagos and/or to Spain/Portugal
Stephanie Burnett, Spanish teacher at Meigs, is leading a trip to the Galapagos Islands over Spring Break, and to Spain and Portugal in July 2010. If you would like more information about either trip, please contact her at stephanie.burnett@mnps.org .

Plan to play baseball? Get on the team email list.
HFA Baseball plans for fall conditioning, winter practices, and spring games are in process. If you are on the team (or planning to sign up) and are NOT receiving emails with preliminary plans/information/team roster, email Carie Lee Kennedy at carielee.kennedy@vanderbilt.edu to be added to the team roster and to receive the recent email messages.

For just $13 you can grab our denim tie-dye unisex shirt or a fitted rainbow tie-dye girl’s shirt. As always, the Spirit Shop will be open between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. each Friday. Questions? Kenyon Review's Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers – enter Nov. 1-30
Attention sophomore and junior poets!!  The Kenyon Review will publish the works of student writers in their prestigious literary magazine. The grand prize winner will earn a scholarship to attend the Kenyon Young Writers Workshop next summer in Gambier, Ohio.  To enter, go to kenyonreview.org and click on the contest link from Nov. 1-30.

Sign-up for Trip to China (Summer 2010) still open
Hume-Fogg students may still join the trip to China; approximately 10 to 12 slots are open. Hume-Fogg students will be joining students from St. Edward’s for the trip to China, which begins on June 22. Students will travel for 12 days. The trip includes visits to Tien An Men Square, the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace in Beijing, a trip to the Great Wall, a cruise on the Yangtze River that winds through some of China’s most scenic country, and a trip to Shanghai, which includes the Bund, the Pearl Tower, an acrobatic show and the World Expo. Students will stay in 4 and 5 star hotels that offer Western accommodations.  Our structured program includes sightseeing trips, excursions, walking tours and many exciting lo cal activities. A full-time, specially selected tour guide will accompany us on all of our educational excursions and assist us in making the most of our free time and shopping opportunities.
