Hume-Fogg students make good impression on Henry David Thoreau Day Ms. Smith distributed the following letter Mr. Fleming received after other Radnor Park visitors encountered Hume-Fogg students at the park during the Junior Honors English Henry David Thoreau Day activities:
Dear Mr. Fleming;
On this past Thursday I spent the morning at Radnor Lake introducing Tennessee birds to a visiting birder and bird photographer from Gothenburg, Sweden. It was his first visit to this part of the country and he was excited at the prospect of seeing many species that were new to him. Thus, we were dismayed when we arrived at the lake to find two Metro school buses in the parking lot, and both of us expressed our frustration at the prospect of having to put up with a bunch of noisy school kids while attempting to pursue the quiet business of spotting birds.
We could not have been more wrong. Those "noisy school kids" turned out to be two busloads of Hume-Fogg students who were there with their teachers to experience the out-of-doors as part of the their study of Henry David Thoreau. And they were as orderly, respectful, attractive, and intellectually engaged a group of teenagers as I have ever seen.
Not only were they not in the least disruptive of what we were trying to do, they were so quietly engaged in their work that we felt it was incumbent upon us to be very careful not to disturb them. I didn't learn exactly how their task had been defined for them, but they were all going about it with serious intent. Needless to say, I was impressed, and, as the host of a foreign visitor, very, very proud of those kids. My guest remarked that he had not seen any group of Swedish young people to compare with them.
I did have the opportunity to express my gratitude to a couple of the teachers (I had the distinct impression that they had very little to do; those young people didn't need chaperoning) and both of them were exuberant about the satisfaction and joy they found in teaching at Hume-Fogg.
Thank you for what you and your staff are doing there. If we just had more schools like Hume-Fogg and more students like those.... at any rate, my faith in our country's future got a boost.
Sincerely,
Lucius DuBose
Thanks for supporting Hume-Fogg
