Hume-Fogg Weekly News – October 8, 2009

Each week during the school year, the Hume-Fogg PTO provides this on-line summary of upcoming happenings and news of interest to Hume-Fogg families. Information comes from H-F’s administration, teachers, parents, students, SGA and PTO committee chairs. Tennessee Governor’s School – Completed Applications due TOMORROW
This free summer opportunity to earn college credits is available to current sophomores and juniors. Subject areas include Agricultural Sciences, Arts, Computational Physics, Emerging Technologies, Engineering, Humanities, International Studies, Information Technology Leadership, Prospective Teachers, Sciences, Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage (archeology, etc.) or Scientific Models and Data Analysis. Download the application on-line at http://www.tennessee.gov/education/govschools/index.shtml. You must return your application to Guidance TOMORROW - Friday, Oct. 9.

Upcoming Events

  • Oct. 14 - PSAT/MNSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) - All 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will take the PSAT/NMSQT, which measures students’ verbal, math and writing skills. The test can be taken only once each year. Typically, students take the PSAT/NMSQT in their junior year to enter National Merit Competitions and to prepare for the SAT; Hume-Fogg students also take it as freshmen and sophomores to help prepare for the junior-year exam. If you have not yet paid the $15 test fee for your child, please contact the Guidance Office, as a late fee may apply.
  • Oct. 15, noon, Hume-Fogg Conference Room – Hume-Fogg Association Meeting - Mark your calendar for future meetings on Nov. 19, Dec. 10, Jan. 21, Feb. 18, March 11, April 15 and May 20. All meetings are scheduled at noon in the Hume-Fogg Conference Room.
  • Oct. 16-23 – Fall Break, students do not report to school
  • Oct. 24 – ACT Test Date, 8 a.m.
  • Oct. 29, Freshman Night Out, 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. at Hume-Fogg

Freshman and Freshman Parents invited to Freshman Night Out Thursday, Oct. 29
All Freshmen and their parents are encouraged to attend Freshman Night Out on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. at Hume Fogg. Students will discuss strategies for academic success with faculty members, and Principal Paul Fleming and 9th Grade counselor Bess Romberg parents will lead a separate workshop for parents.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors may enter Bennington Young Writers contest
Bennington College will awards prizes of $500 and $250 to students who win in the Bennington Young Writers Awards. Students must be in grades 10, 11 or 12, and may enter up to three pieces of poetry, a short story, a one-act play or a non-fiction essay. All entries must be sponsored by a teacher and postmarked by Nov. 1. Kenyon Review's Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers
Attention sophomore and junior poets!!  The Kenyon Review will publish the works of student writers in their prestigious literary magazine. The grand prize winner will earn a scholarship to attend the Kenyon Young Writers Workshop next summer in Gambier, Ohio.  To enter, go to kenyonreview.org and click on the contest link from Nov. 1-30.

Hume-Fogg students launching literary magazine - donations welcome!
The HFA Imaginative Writing Department will be re-launching Cadenza, our literary magazine.  We will be accepting donations and holding fundraisers to cover publishing costs.  If you are interested in sharing resources or donating funds to help us celebrate student writing at HFA, please e-mail Ms. Handy at Alesha.Handy@mnps.org.

English students experience Henry David Thoreau Day at Radnor Lake
On Thursday, Oct. 8, and Friday, Oct. 9, juniors in honors English are spending a day at Radnor Lake, where they will apply their readings from the writings of Henry David Thoreau to a writing assignment completed during four stops along a hike at the lake and after the hike is completed.

Exchange students from Germany at Hume-Fogg through Oct. 17
Four exchange students from Germany are shadowing students at Hume-Fogg and MLK from through Oct. 17. The four students at Hume-Fogg are participating in some German classes. The students are here through a direct exchange program coordinated by the Germany Ministry of Culture from the Gymnasiale Oberstufe in Taunusstein near Wiesbaden, Germany.

Trips to Italy (Spring Break 2010) & China (Summer 2010) – Commit by Oct. 15!
Hume-Fogg students may take advantage of two extraordinary trips, directed by Hume-Fogg teachers. Ms. Marty Robinson is leaving these trips. Students wanting to spend Spring Break in Italy need to make a written or verbal commitment to Ms. Robinson by Oct. 15, and pay a deposit by Nov. 30. Students wanting to go to China must make a firm commitment by Oct. 15, due to the complexities of scheduling travel in China. The China trip begins on June 22, and students will travel for 12 days. The trip includes visits to Tien An Men Square, the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace in Beijing, a trip to the Great Wall, a cruise on the Yangtze River that winds through some of China’s most scenic country, and a trip to Shanghai, which includes the Bund, the Pearl Tower, an ac robatic show and the World Expo. Students will stay in 4 and 5 star hotels that offer Western accommodations.  Our structured program includes sightseeing trips, excursions, walking tours and many exciting local activities. A full-time, specially selected tour guide will accompany us on all of our educational excursions and assist us in making the most of our free time and shopping opportunities.

“The Merchant of Venice” at Vanderbilt’s Neely Auditorium Oct. 9-10 8 p.m.

“Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Literary Soldier” – October 15, 6:30 p.m.,  Southside Community Church
Playwright Elizabeth Davidson will perform her one woman play, "Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Literary Soldier,” at the  Southside Community Church, 2080 12th Avenue South (460-7722). This play that delves into the American experience of race relations and human dignity in a multi-cultural, multi-racial community, past and present.  Following the play, Tennessee State Representative Brenda Gilmore will lead a discussion on race relations in the “post-Obama era.”

Math Lab open Monday-Thursdays from 3:15-4:15 p.m.
The mathematics lab, which is staffed each day by a math teacher, is open from 3:15 – 4:15 every Monday through Thursday. Students can receive math homework help and use computers to work on assignments for any class. 

Online Directory Available
The online directory, an online version of the printed school directory, is now available for the use of members of the Hume-Fogg community only. For security purposes you must register to use the program. Your username is the email address where you received this email.
