 Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools work in close collaboration with local, state and federal health, safety and emergency personnel to develop and maintain plans for coping with a variety of emergencies to protect all students while they are at school. MNPS has an emergency preparedness plan. Representatives of our District sit on the Davidson County emergency planning committees and emergency management teams, planning our community's responses to potential threats. In fact, the school system and all MNPS school facilities have safety and security plans that are regularly reviewed and updated. These plans include procedures to respond to critical incidents, such as fire (SS3.110), tornado(SS 3.107), snow and ice or local threat. Schools practice fire, tornado and security drills regularly.
 The ability to remain flexible is a key component of district-wide preparedness as well as each school's emergency preparedness plan. The actions taken during any type of emergency situation depend a great deal on the specifics of the incident. For example, one or more schools in an area may evacuate, lock down or initiate a shelter-in-place response, according to the nature of the threat. School principals have a variety of "tools" to use and have received training on how to use them. Additionally, MNPS would follow direction from public safety officials.
As a member of the Metropolitan Nashville community the District is prepared to provide facilities and transportation during regional emergencies.

Crisis Response
Effective crisis response is a team effort. In our district, seven offices work together with the school leaders at the site and public safety officials to provide immediate and coordinated action.
- Crisis Management - Operations, Transportation Services, the Office of School Security and the Crisis Aftercare ResponsE (CARE) Team lead the immediate and long-term response teams.
- Crisis Communications - The Pubic Information Office, along with Student Assignment Services and Information Technology ensure that students, staff members, parents, and the community have accurate and timely information during a crisis.
- Crisis Intervention - School psychologists, social workers and counselors provide care and support for students and staff members affected by a crisis, as well as assisting you with information to assist your child(ren) during the crisis.
- Lockout and Lockdown– Schools stage lockout drills when there is criminal activity near the school. Lockout drills enable teaching and learning to continue while protecting students from any dangerous activities that may be taking place in the general vacinity of the school. A Lockdown drill is used to prepare for a crisis that takes place inside the school. The lockdown is a proven police and emergency response means to protect the students and school staff from harm. When a school is “in lockdown,” parents may not be permitted to enter the school building or students to leave while the drill is taking place. Whether a lockout or lockdown drill is conducted as a result of dangerous activities, students will not be allowed to leave the school, nor will parents be allowed to enter the school – for the protection of all the children.
- Fire/Tornado Drill – Schools practice fire drills once a month by state law and school board policy. Our district policy requires schools to practice tornado drills in September and March in preparation for tornado season.
- Shelter-in-Place – each school has provisions for students and staff should a need for students to remain at their schools until help arrives.
