Teachers

Founded in 1987, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has issued the most eloquently articulated statements about teaching available. The five core propositions of NBPTS attempt to capture and synthesize the behaviors and characteristics of accomplished teachers.

  • Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
  • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
  • Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
  • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learning from experience.
  • Teachers are members of learning communities.

The teachers at Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School demonstrate remarkable teaching expertise. As indicated in the school-wide mission statement, the development of the individual’s unique talents focuses daily dialogue among faculty, administrators, parents, and students. Hume-Fogg teachers use learning benchmarks to set curriculum, research-based strategies to deliver instruction, and assessment standards to determine student progress toward goals. This approach helps students realize that they are required to learn and that they are surrounded by a tight support system.

What is good teaching? Effective teaching? Accomplished teaching? It is an elusive commodity that is difficult to define. Come to Hume-Fogg. You’ll see it every day in any classroom. As indicated by their unwavering dedication to every student, the teachers here consider it a great privilege and responsibility to spend time with young minds.
