March 24, 2009

Dear Student:

It’s that time again! The volleyball season will be here before we know it, and in order to develop a strong, successful program, we must get started conditioning very soon.

TSSAA has passed new legislation allowing teams to have 3 days of practice and/or tryouts after school ends but before the summer dead period. Therefore, tryouts for the 2009 volleyball season will be held in May this year.

Spring conditioning is open to all ladies interested in becoming a part of the HFA 2009 Volleyball team. Although attendance is not mandatory, it’s in the best interest of the athlete to attend as many sessions as possible in order to become familiar with the program, prepare the body for competition, and begin developing a sense of dedication to the team. Conditioning will consist of lifting weights, running, plyometrics, and jump training as well as some open gym time. All participants need to be on time for conditioning. After school open conditioning will begin Tuesday, April 7, 2009. [See attached schedule.]

Spring practice will be May 26 & 27 and will be open to all ladies who would like to try-out (including incoming freshmen). Athletes will receive coaching instruction that will benefit them at the TRY-OUT date, Thursday, May 28. All ladies interested in becoming a part of the 2009 volleyball team MUST attend this try-out session. Those who make the team will begin MANDTORY conditioning June 2 (see attached scheduled) with a parent/player meeting to follow immediately after. Official team practice begins Monday, July 6. The team will attend Team Camp at Belmont University on July 19-22, the cost of which is $255 per athlete.

NOTE: An additional tryout will be held July 6 for any transfer students or incoming freshmen that receive late acceptance to HFA. All current students or registered incoming freshmen must attend the May 28 tryout.

Summer conditioning and practices are mandatory for all players who make the JV/Varsity team. Please make adjustments to your schedule now. Once school begins, practice will be held everyday after school unless further instructions are given. The team will participate in fundraising activities to take place before school begins. Player attendance at these events is expected as well.

Although the volleyball season is relatively short, it is quite intensive. Student-athletes need to be able to balance their academics with their volleyball schedule. In addition to weekly practice and games, the schedule will consist of several weekend tournaments.

NOTE TO INCOMING FRESHMEN:

Incoming freshmen can begin conditioning/practice with other HFA students after the last day of school in May. Freshmen are encouraged to tryout for JV/Varsity team; however, if a freshman does not make the team, she can tryout for the freshmen team during the first week of school in August. Also, there is a new physical form that freshmen must turn in before participating in high school athletics. Please visit www.tssaa.org.

Attached is the spring and summer schedule for our team. You will also find a form to list your contact information. Please return this to me or the office ASAP if you are interested in trying out for the team.

Please read the following reminders about conditioning:

  1. To participate in conditioning, you must have a current sports physical. You may not participate in any activities until you have this physical completed. You can pick up a form from the office or from Ms. Boles at school. If you have a physical from the current school year, it will expire on May 1, 2009. All participants will need to fill out an Emergency Contact card.

  1. You should be dropped off and picked up on time at the location listed on the schedule.

  1. The schedule is subject to change due to weather and other sports schedules, so please listen for any announcements of changes to the schedule.

  1. Students who are not able to participate in Spring conditioning because of their involvement with other in-season sports need to indicate that information on the interest form.

I look forward to seeing you starting on APRIL 7. If you have questions about the volleyball program, you can email me at emilyjeanmoore@gmail.com. See you soon!
