Hume-Fogg Fundraising Campaign, 2009-2010

Without a doubt, Hume-Fogg Academic is an excellent school. The education your child receives at HFA is the best of any public school in the city, and arguably the best overall. The difference between a good school and a great school is often the little things, and with funds raised through Invest in Excellence, Hume-Fogg Association (the PTO) can help provide the extra assistance teachers and departments need to enhance our student’s overall education. Many needs of the school are not covered by Metro funding and thus these needs are met each year
by you – the families of our students – through a pledge to the Invest in Excellence campaign. Please help our teachers help your students reach their full potential.

The Invest in Excellence campaign is the primary fundraiser for the PTO, raising over 90% of the budget. We understand that every family has different circumstances, but please consider a gift of at least $250 per student. Our goal is to raise $75,000 and we will happily accept any pledge amount. In previous years, roughly 1/3 of families have made a pledge, and we think it is important to increase that percentage significantly

INVEST IN EXCELLENCE
Has and continues to support...

• Writing lab, math lab and foreign language lab – With the help of the PTO, Hume-Fogg has three computer learning labs to help students in these respective areas. The labs are staffed using PTO funds and are used by classes as well as individuals seeking extra help or tutoring.
• SmartBoards – SmartBoard technology is available in all the HFA math classrooms and many of the other classrooms as well. A SmartBoard is a device that allows a computer screen to become touch sensitive and allows students and teachers to collaborate and interact with the information on the screen.
• Scholar in Residence program – Hume-Fogg brings in outside scholars – experts in their respective fields, to give lectures to the students and follow up with smaller group Q&A sessions, allowing students to directly experience different fields of interest.
• Technology – HFA has two mobile laptop labs for use by all classrooms.
• Improvements to the lecture hall – PTO funds were used to purchase desks, sound system and audio visual equipment that allows the lecture hall to be used by large groups.
• ACT and SAT test prep classes – The PTO has supplemented the cost of these important classes to keep them affordable for all students.
• Freshman orientation – All incoming freshmen are given the opportunity to participate in an orientation that familiarizes them with the HFA campus, the downtown area, and the ‘satellite’ classrooms, i.e. the Downtown Library and the Frist Center.
• Professional Development – Our staff is able to receive the development they need with the assistance of the PTO to keep Hume-Fogg a nationally competitive school.
• Athletics – Because HFA does not have a football team, we do not have a major revenue-raising sport to help fund the athletic department. The PTO assists the teams financially and tries to replace one team’s uniforms every year.
• Band and Music – Using PTO funds, the auditorium has been renovated and the sound equipment updated
• Arts – The PTO is able to help the art department purchase consumables for use in classes.
