Philosophy: Students should be afforded a balanced mathematics program that emphasizes the basic skills essential for mathematical competence while stressing the application of skills through reasoning and problem solving in a variety of contexts. While appropriate use of calculators and manipulatives are integral to understanding mathematical concepts, students should be expected to communicate by discussing the ideas involved in a mathematics problem, writing coherently about mathematical topics, and explaining the processes involved in solving mathematical problems.
