Thomas F. Cash, Jr.

Native Nashvillian Tom Cash has been teaching in Metro for thirteen years, five of which have been spent at Hume-Fogg. Mr. Cash teaches both 9th grade English as well as our We the People government class and also serves as the sponsor of the chess team and the Student Government Association.

Fascinated with current issues himself, Mr. Cash aims to inspire similar interest in his students.

He says, “My teaching philosophy is ever changing, but generally it’s to let literature be a springboard for discussion of relevant issues - both social and personal - and to allow students to find their own voice as they discuss and write about these issues.”

Claiming to have a fairly traditional teaching style, Mr. Cash encourages individualism as he urges his students to discuss what they have learned both from literature as well as current events.

Mr. Cash says, “I expect students to get a sense of the different kinds of literature available to them throughout their lives and to find their own voice in their writing.”

Aside from teaching, Mr.Cash is passionate about politics as well as his children Hayden and Ella.

Mr. Cash is able to successfully join English and politics both in the classroom and out.

He says, “If I weren’t teaching, I’d probably be in the publishing industry doing marketing-type writing and editing - possibly working on candidate and issue-oriented campaigns.”
